This award recognizes a New England Junior Holstein Exhibitor for his or her efforts and interest in all aspects of the Holstein industry. The recipient of this award has a high level of participation in junior programs, excels in herdsmanship, is knowledgeable of his or her Holstein project cattle, has demonstrated leadership qualities, and has a sustained commitment to the Holstein breed.

 

Lee Salonen was a member of the New England States Holstein Association for over 50 years. He rendered tireless service on the board for 33 years in nearly every leadership position including President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Finance Chair and Finance Chair for the 2005 National Holstein Convention hosted by the New England States Holstein Association.  Lee was also a recipient of the New England Association’s prestigious Distinguished Service award. Providing opportunities for youth to grow within the industry was the cornerstone of Lee’s leadership philosophy, a philosophy that continues even today.

GENERAL GUIDELINES 
•    Award to be a $500 cash prize, presented at the New England Annual Meeting in honor of Lee Salonen.
•    Selection will be completed by an anonymous committee.
REQUIREMENTS
•    The recipient must be a New England and National Junior Holstein member and may win this award only once.
•    Youth must exhibit their own Holsteins at any of the following within the past two years: Northeast All Breeds Spring Show, any state show in New England, New England Summer Show, New England 4-H Dairy Show at ESE, Northeast Fall National Holstein Show, World Dairy Expo.
SELECTION CRITERIA 
•    SPORTSMANSHIP
Applicant must have the highest standards in good sportsmanship, cooperation with show management, willingness to share skills with others and display courtesy and congeniality to other exhibitors, Holstein members and the public. Applicants must be present at the show(s).
•    HERDSMANSHIP
Applicant must demonstrate the highest ideals of animal care and welfare, efficiency and a strong work ethic in their exhibit and cattle and outwardly display working knowledge of this portion of the dairy industry.  Applicant must be present at the show(s).
•    LEVEL OF PARTICIPATION IN HOLSTEIN ACTIVITIES
Applicant must illustrate his or her level of participation in Holstein activities on a state, regional, New England and national level.
•    LEVEL OF LEADERSHIP PARTICIPATION IN OTHER YOUTH DAIRY
ORGANIZATIONS
Applicant must illustrate his or her level of participation in other youth dairy organizations.
