DISTINGUISHED
JUNIOR MEMBER:
This contest is available to juniors on three levels: the Junior Scrapbook
contest is for ages 9-13; the intermediate contest (the Thomas Elder
Award) is for ages 14-17; and the senior contest (the John Atwood Award)
is for ages 17 and above. The
contests begin on a state level - winning state contestants then compete
on a New England level at the New England Annual Meeting & Convention
in the fall. Cash prizes are awarded at the New England contests: $50 for
the Junior Scrap Book Contest winner, $75 for the Thomas Elder Award
winner and $100 for the John Atwood Award winner. The senior level New
England John Atwood Award winner(s) will be eligible to enter the national
Distinguished Junior Member contest.
Check to obtain more information on your state contest. JUNIOR
STAR BREEDER: This award is designed to recognize young
breeders who have personally succeeded in breeding high performance
cattle. A graduated scale for
performance by age is used with a minimum requirement for both production
and classification. A Junior
Breeder who has received 5 JUNIOR STAR BREEDER Certificates is then
eligible for the N.E. Junior Progressive Breeder plaque.
These awards are presented each year at the New England Annual
Meeting & Convention in the fall.
Applications, mailed in the spring to all juniors, are due in the
New England Office by April 10th.
Copies of these applications are sent on to the National
Association for recognition in their Junior Award Programs. JUNIOR
BREEDER OF AN EXCELLENT: This award, open to all ages,
recognizes Juniors who have bred a Holstein cow which has been officially
type classified Excellent. Qualifying
applicants are acknowledged at the New England Annual Meeting &
Convention in the fall. Applications,
mailed in the spring to all juniors, are due by April 10th,
and are automatically forwarded to the Holstein Association for national
recognition. 30,000
LBS. COW: This award, open to all ages, is given to Juniors who have bred and
owned any animal producing 30,000 pound of milk, or more, in 305 days or
less. Qualifying applicants
are acknowledged at the New England Annual Meeting & Convention in the
fall. Applications, mailed in
the spring to all juniors, are due by April 10th, and are
automatically forwarded to the Holstein Association for national
recognition. 150,000
LBS. LIFETIME PRODUCTION:
This award, open to all ages, is
given to Juniors who own an animal which has a lifetime of 150,000 lbs.
The junior must have owned the animal prior to its first calving
and the record must have been made entirely under the ownership of the
junior. Qualifying applicants
are acknowledged at the New England Annual Meeting & Convention in the
fall. Applications, mailed in the spring to all juniors, are due by April
10th, and are automatically forwarded to the Holstein Association for
national recognition. 200,000
LBS. LIFETIME PRODUCTION: This award, open to all ages, is
given to Juniors who own an animal which has a lifetime of 200,000 lbs.
The junior must have owned the animal prior to its first calving
and the record must have been made entirely under the ownership of the
junior. Qualifying applicants
are acknowledged at the New England Annual Meeting & Convention in the
fall. Applications, mailed in the spring to all juniors, are due by April
10th, and are automatically forwarded to the Holstein Association for
national recognition. PRODUCTION
AWARDS: Junior-owned milk, fat and protein production
leaders are recognized each year in each of the Milking Yearling, 2,3,4,5
and aged cow divisions. Entries
with the highest production in each category (milk, fat, protein) of their
age division receive award plaques. Juniors of all ages may apply. Awards
are presented at the New England Annual Meeting & Convention in the
fall. Applications, mailed to all juniors in late summer, are due
by September 1st.
JUNIOR
ALL NEW ENGLAND AWARDS: Winners are selected based on
placings at the Northeast Fall National Show at Eastern States Exposition.
Animals must be shown by the Junior member. ACTIVITIES DAIRY
QUIZ BOWL: Each state may send a Junior and Senior team to
compete on a New England level. The
New England competition is held at the New England Annual Meeting &
Convention in the fall. High scoring individuals in the New England
contest form a Junior and Senior team for national convention.
DAIRY
JEOPARDY:
This contest is modeled after the popular television program,
Jeopardy. Youth will compete
as individuals at the New England Annual Meeting & Convention in the
fall. Contests will consists
of 6 categories, each with 5 questions. A maximum of six players will
compete at one time. Points
are awarded for correctly answering questions about the dairy industry and
related areas. Contestants must be between the ages of 9-13 as of January
1 in the year competing. Contestants
in the Dairy Jeopardy Contest are not eligible for participation in the
New England Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest.
PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST:
Contestants compete in three age divisions at the New England Annual
Meeting & Convention in the fall.
Ages are as of January 1 in the year competing.
Junior Division: 9 to 13 years old.
Intermediate Division: 14 to 17 years old.
Senior Division: 18 to 21 years old.
Contestants may choose any subject pertaining to Holstein Cattle
and the Holstein Industry. Current
policies, affairs and trends in the industry are suitable topics. Check to
receive a copy of the rules.
JUNIOR
CONFERENCE AND JUNIOR TOUR: Established programs do no currently exist for these
two activities. Let us know
if you would be interested in an organized conference or tour.
NEW
ENGLAND ANNUAL MEETING & CONVENTION: The Annual Meeting & Convention of the
Association is held in the fall of each year.
The New England Junior Club holds its annual meeting at this time
and there are many activities (contests, awards, programs) for junior
members. Information about
the convention is sent to all juniors in early fall.
STATE
HOLSTEIN SHOWS: Each of the six New England states
has a state Holstein show. As
a New England Junior member, you will automatically receive the show
information and entries for your state.
NORTHEAST
FALL NATIONAL SHOW AND SHOWING & FITTING CONTEST AT EASTERN STATES
EXPOSITION: The Northeast Fall National Holstein Show
takes place each year in September at Eastern States Exposition in
Springfield, MA. The Showing
& Fitting Contest is open to all National Holstein Assoc. Junior
members who exhibit or are assisting a farm exhibiting cattle.
It is not required that participants show their own animals if they
are not exhibitors. Youth
will be divided into three classes with an overall champion named.
The contest takes place the afternoon before the open show, with
registration the day previous. |
